Carlos Amestoy Receives Full Scholarship to Maine University for Hockey
The University of Maine hockey team has landed forward Carlos Amestoy for its recruiting class in 2010.
Amestoy, a 16-year-old from Toronto, attending PEAC School For Elite Athletes, has committed verbally to Maine. He is 5-foot-7 and possesses elite speed and hands, according to his coach, Mike Galati of the Toronto Red Wings, a peewee major team.
Maine coaches cannot comment on verbal commitments.
“He skates like the wind,” said Galati. “I know the size is the first thing you see, but when you watch him? He’s in the biggest games against the best teams and he’s still the best player on the ice.”
Galati said Amestoy also is very strong for his size but that his quickness sets him apart.
“Carlos does everything at top speed,” said Galati. “He has great hands. Some guys can’t (use them) at top speed. He can.”
Amestoy attended two games at Alfond Arena with his team in October and loved the campus.
“I actually spoke to one of the people who came to watch,” said Amestoy. “They said they had driven five hours to watch the game. It was kind of cool to hear. I thought the campus was beautiful, and the game environment was great—the band, everyone cheering.”
It has become more common in the last five or so years for players 16 and even 15 to commit verbally to college programs.
Lewiston native Mark Anthoine committed to play at Maine last winter when he was 16. He plays for the Chicago Steel of the United States Hockey League and is expected to enter Maine in 2009.
Defenseman Kevin Gagne, a 15-year-old from New Brunswick, committed to Maine early this winter. He is expected to join the team in 2010.
“I’ve watched (Amestoy) improve and improve, and I think he has a future in college,” said Galati. “I didn’t expect it this early, but he’s an elite player up here. And it’s getting a lot more popular up here to go the college route.”
Eric Chevrier NCAA Division 1 Hockey Scholarship with UNH
UNH Planning for the Future
5’9”, 190 lb. RD Eric Chevier, a ’93 on the Toronto Marlies Midget Minor squad, has committed to UNH for the fall of ’11 (at the earliest – he’s a sophomore in high school).
Chevrier is a hard-nosed, strong, gritty defenseman in the mold of a Mick Mounsey. He has good feet, and both moves the puck and shoots it well. Most importantly, he’s a defensive leader who excels without the puck, and is very tough to play against.
Ryan Addison Award
A $5,000.00 bursary has been donated to PEAC by Jackie Evans in memory of her son and Neil Doctorow’s best friend. Ryan passed away from a vicious form of cancer at the early age of 30 years old. Ryan was a professional level rugby player and wonderful mathematics teacher at Northview Secondary School. Ryan will be missed by his friends and relatives but his memory will be kept alive at PEAC through the PEAC Terry Fox Run and through bursary and scholarships like this.
The recipient of the Ryan Addison award is selected by Jackie based on their level of commitment to school and sport. This individual must take their academics as seriously as their athletics and must maintain a high standard in both academics and athletics.
The recipient of the 2007/2008 Ryan Addison award was selected by Jackie Evans based on her own due diligence. This year’s award winner is James Hennessy. James has demonstrated a proficiency in hockey and has demonstrated a commitment to learning and seriousness in his academic pursuits. James has aspirations of playing professional hockey but remains grounded, understanding that his school must come first. James currently plays hockey for the Jr. Canadiens 1993 AAA team. He redefines the term “power forward” as he stands over 6 feet tall and weighs close to 200 lbs. At 14 years old James truly embodies the true meaning of the ultimate athlete. We wish James well and a big congratulations on winning this very prestigious award.
